McBackpack

Believing that children, if well nourished, are able to participate more fully in the learning environment, McBackpack provides supplemental food to Poudre School District students

Homelessness

McKinney Vento

According to the McKinney Act, a homeless individual is one who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate residence:

  • Fixed - a residence that is stationary, permanent and not subject to change.
  • Regular - a residence that is used on a regular, nightly basis.
  • Adequate - a residence that is sufficient in meeting both the physical and psychological   needs typically met in home environments

This includes:

  • Shared housing (doubled up) with friends or relatives due to the loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reason.
    • Please note: families that share an adequate space for a long-term basis due to preference or convenience may not qualify for McKinney.**
  • Live in motels, hotels, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative adequate accommodations.
  • Live in emergency or transitional shelters/transitional housing programs.
  • Abandoned in hospitals.
  • Live in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing (i.e. no utilities, mold, infestation), bus or train stations, or similar settings.
  • Have a primary residence that is not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
  • Migratory children living in the aforementioned circumstances.
  • Unaccompanied youth not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
    • This includes youth that run away from home, even if the parent(s)/guardian(s)/caretaker states a desire for the youth to return home.**
  • Students/families that have been displaced due to a natural disaster.

For students without a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence the following rights apply:

  1. Go to school no matter where they live or how long they have lived there
  2. Choose between the local school where they are living, the school they attended before they lost their housing, or the school where they were last enrolled
  3. Enroll in school without proof of address, immunizations, school records, or other documents
  4. Have access to extracurricular activities
  5. Get transportation to their school or origin (if feasible and in their educational best interest)
  6. Get all the school services they need (including free breakfast/lunch, fees waived)
  7. Be free from harassment and isolation
  8. Have disagreements with the schools settled quickly

If any of these housing situations pertain to you, please contact Dawn Luze at 970-472-2727.
